An Introduction to Cannabis, Hemp & CBD Safety Testing

The range of lab tests offered by Atlantic Test Labs helps clients develop and maintain superior products. Even if not legally required, as in the case for hemp and CBD products, they give producers peace of mind and afford consumers the confidence they demand. We recommend the following safety tests and we’re always here to help you interpret results and make adjustments to improve your product – whether it’s cannabis, hemp or CBD.

Safety Tests:

Water activity is different from dissolved water or “moisture content” within the product. This “free water” is important to measure because it can provide a breeding ground for mold and other microorganisms.

Heavy metals and pesticides are self-explanatory and obviously contaminants you don’t want in your product. These both often arise from contaminated soil and are more prevalent for outside growing operations.

Mycotoxins – Produced by molds and fungus, these are living organisms that decompose organic matter and can be highly toxic to humans. Byproducts of mold and mildew, exposure to high humidity during storage can introduce mycotoxins.

Foreign matter – A foreign matter inspection will determine if there is anything in the sample that is non-usable. This includes large foreign particles, hair, insects, mold colonies, or any other foreign particles.

Microbials – This test quantifies living microorganisms, such as bacteria, yeast and mold, found in the sample.

Residual Solvents – Some producers of cannabis products use solvents to
extract and/or concentrate the active ingredients of cannabis. As a result, it does not apply to flower, but testing for any remaining solvents is often important for concentrate or infused products.
