Roxanne Newman in her latest article for Analytical Cannabis asks Amanda Horodyski, Atlantic Test Lab’s Microbiology Lab Manager, about the importance of microbial testing of cannabis, the biggest challenges the industry currently faces, the best microbial test methods, and what’s to come in the future.
Amanda says, “Microbial testing in the cannabis industry is extremely important, particularly for immunocompromised medical cannabis patients who can get infected easily.” Amanda goes on to talk about how standards vary from state to state, causing confusion for the industry and for consumers. She points out that since Atlantic Test Labs is based in Maryland, it maintains ISO 17025 accreditation. Beyond Maryland’s high standards, she explains that sample preparation and analysis procedures are just as important for each lab.
She discusses some of the approaches and protocols that ATL has established to minimize cross-contamination and ensure highly accurate results. Amanda also explains how ATL works to help clients when contamination is discovered. “Once we have identified the organisms, we can narrow down the source of contamination and recommend disinfection techniques. This is a great resource for our clients so they can prevent any future contamination.”
