There are two different measures involving moisture and it’s important to understand the difference and how they’re used for testing your hemp and cannabis products.
Moisture – percentage of moisture in the product
Water Activity – the amount of free water present
Moisture in the product will affect its weight and THC concentration, so it is an important factor for state cannabis regulation. Moisture analysis is therefore included as part of our Potency testing for cannabis or hemp flower, but obviously not a factor for liquid products such as concentrate or infused products.
Water activity, however, is the amount of “free water” present – water that is not chemically combined with the plant material. Present in significant amounts, free water can provide a breeding ground for mold and other microorganisms. So, this is a separate, but equally important safety test for cannabis or hemp flower.
