ATL Now Tests for the Presence of Vitamin E Acetate

Atlantic Test Labs has added a new test to identify the presence of vitamin E acetate. Vitamin E acetate is the chemical linked to lung injury according to the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control. This test is now required by the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission and ATL is also making it available to their hemp clients nationwide who order tests online and send concentrate samples for testing.

Vitamin E acetate is an additive for vaping or e-cigarettes used as a thickening agent or to dilute concentrate. While vitamin E is common and safe when used topically, when inhaled, it appears to be toxic. The CDC found vitamin E acetate in the lung fluid samples of 29 patients as it recently investigated 450 suspected vape-related illnesses and three deaths nationwide. The CDC then recommended, “Until the relationship of vitamin E acetate and lung health is better understood, vitamin E acetate should not be added to e-cigarette, or vaping, products.”

In response to these findings, and many inquiries from concerned patients, the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission (MMCC) issued a bulletin November 15th, 2019, banning the use of vitamin E acetate and expanding required laboratory testing to ensure it is not present in all medical cannabis vape products, including vape products that passed the previous compliance testing requirements.
